526 Convair US Navy Pogo Vertical Takeoff Aircraft
The Convair XFY Pogo was an experimental vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) fighter developed by the U.S. Navy in the 1950s. Designed to take off and land vertically on its tail, it featured contra-rotating propellers and a turboprop engine, eliminating the need for runways or aircraft carriers. The XFY Pogo could transition from vertical to horizontal flight mid-air, showcasing impressive agility for its time. However, landing proved extremely difficult, as pilots had to look over their shoulders during descent. Despite successful test flights, the project was canceled due to operational challenges and advancing jet technology. It remains a unique aviation milestone.
